Walking by Faith, Not by Sight: Lessons from Light and Darkness

Some songs don’t just move the heart—they gently re-center it on truth. This one did that for me. It stirred reflection on faith, sight, and the way God invites us to trust Him beyond what we can see. I hope it blesses you the way it blessed me.

I Love the words a dear Christian sister said in her devotional which introduced me to this song. She said,

Look up! I was listening to another new song this morning based on this Bible verse.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. – 2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV

A thought struck me. Now, stick with me on this.

When I taught third grade, I would always teach the children this verse.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 ESV

It would get us into a discussion about how light always overcomes darkness. Think about it, you walk into a dark room, hit the light switch, and light wins (unless the power is out which shows we need a source of power behind the light). I would tell them that when you’re hiking, you have a flashlight in order to shine light on the path. There is no such thing as a “flashdark” to dim your path.

It struck me listening to this song that faith/sight have similar traits to light/darkness. When we try to walk through life and trials in our own strength, by our own sight, we might actually be blinding ourselves to the path God wants us to see and take. Just as light needs to shine to overpower the darkness, our faith needs to overpower our own sight and reasoning.

The Bible says this about God.

even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You. Psalm 139:12 ESV

Since God can see so clearly in the dark because He is light, He is also the only One who can see what is ahead for our road of life. It stands to reason then that we shouldn’t try to find our way with our limited sight. We should be taking every step in faith.

Even so come Lord Jesus 🙏
